I heard that ps3 can emulate a few games from the ps2 but, has a bunch of issues....maybe it's best to buy one just before they permantly pull them from the shelves.

Yeah, I agree. I think Sony will stop building them pretty soon since it looks like the silver slim PS2 is the last model to be manufactured.

The PS3 can improve compatibility via firmware updates but it might take a while...

I guess things will be a little shaky in the beginning since the XBOX 360 went through the same thing with backwards compatibility and it is still being refined to this day. The PS2 had issues with running some PS1 titles when it first launched if I remember correctly. The only one who has seemed to master this is Nintendo with its Gameboy line of games.
