Will this update work regardless of the current firmware? I have 4.2 (yeah, I know, I'm an idiot) but I'm not interested in the homebrew channel. I would just like to play the newer games.

Newer games have nothing to do with System Menu, and all to do with IOS.

One more time in English for us slow people! Does not answer my question. Will the newer games play if my system is at 4.2 and I install the 1.99 wikey update? I have no idea what IOS is.

It does answer your question, it's just you have no idea what it means as stated in your second sentence. Look, hardmod, softmod --- as to whether a newer game is playable has nothing to do with the System Menu version. You get a black screen on either a soft or hard mod chances are your Wii is missing an IOS. Teal'C has a thread in the Recommended Guides that explains this better --- the reason I posted in the first place is this common fallacy Wii users seem to have ("Oh, I gotta update my System Menu so I can play this really kewl 3l3t3 game")

So I guess that would be a yes.
