Verify that your HDD is using 32KB cluster size or less, use Acronis Disk Director 11 Advanced : right click your disk/change cluster size/current cluster size: I use Acronis Disk Director 11 Advanced on three HDD to change it from 64KB to 32KB and I did not lose any data. (I ONLY RECOMMEND ACRONIS BECAUSE NO DATA LOSS)If you use any other HDD program you will have to backup everything before you change the cluster size.
Just saw your post, did not read all the recent post yet, will check back in 2 hrs, very busy.

OK- so I think I give- I can run Dios Mios Lite with an SD card just fine. I cant with my hard drive. I even re-formatted my hard drive last night with Acronis just to be sure that I was fat 32 with 32kb cluster size. 1 partition, active and primary- put just my GC games on it in the path of games/gamename/game.iso, reinstalled DM 2.6, latest updates for usb loader gx, wiiflow, and usb loader, still black screen, no DM splash screen. I guess my hard drive just isnt compatible to play GC games.... agree?

You could try using our recommended formatting tool (in the FAT32 guide). But other than that, not much to try I don't think.

I'm very curious about what makes a drive incompatible. Does anyone know why one drive will work over another? I know I've asked this before but it just seems so arbitrary that one brainless chunk of digital storage will work and another just won't.

Goathouse, what's more interesting is how you can make a program "more compatible" for USBs. For example, DM isn't compatible will them all, but it can be upgraded to be more compatible (I assume). So what's it about the USB? And why are USB drives different enough from each other for the difference to matter?

If the drive partition table is GPT and not MBR it will not work with DIOS MIOS.
Google how to convert GPT into MBR
      http://www.sevenforu...k-mbr-disk.html
Convert GPT disk to MBR disk with free partition manager, Windows Disk Management and Diskpart command.

That's very good information! It didn't solve my problem but that should still be in the guide.

I'm still getting the DM splash followed by black oblivion with the drive I'm working with. Any other morsels like this I should be aware of?

If you are getting the DM splash screen your USB HDD should be compatible, did you use Wad Manager 1.7 to install DM with IOS236 ?

      You're giving me hope.

I've never had issues with my disc drive and I'm ripping my games with it...

I've tried DM with two different Western Digital usb drives that both work for Wii games. With both drives I get the splash screen but then black screen.

Everything is working fine with the thumb drive I'm using.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I installed DM in 236 -- I just followed the guide, pretty much.

Edit: I didn't use Wad Manager. I used the other one.

Are you getting the DM splash screen with no disc in the disc drive ? And the main GameCube Path is USB1 ?
Re-install DM2.6 with Wad Manager 1.7 with IOS236. I really want you to use Wad Manager 1.7.
Sometimes DM could have issues when you do not use Wad Manager 1.7 to install it, this is why it may work with the thumb drive but not the WD USB drives.

I put the dm 2.6 and wad manager 1.7 wad in the "wad" folder on my sd.

I used homebrew channel to open wad manager. I chose ios 236 at the first screen and then installed DM 2.6.

I went to boot a game that works with my thumb drive and get a splash then black screen.

Note: I've had usb loader gx set to use ios 249. It's been working with the thumb drive this way. Just now, I tried changing that to 236 but it didn't change the outcome. Oddly, when I do that and then reboot the loader... the ios has changed that to 222 all on it's own.

It's all a tad above my head yet...

      Edit:

I've tried it with a disc in and without.

My loader has been set to use 0 usb port. I've been plugging into the bottom port (if the Wii is laying flat.)

Edit 2: yes, the main gamecube path is usb1, and always has been.

      Keep GX set with IOS249 and loader set to 0 USB port. For USB Loader GX, is the custom paths, USB1:/games/;
Do you get the DM splash screen with no disc in the drive? And you verify your USB HDD is FAT32 with 32KB cluster size?
Wad Manager 1.7 is a app not a wad it goes in your apps folder.
IOS236 is recommended to install wads, not play games.

      I do, yes.

And the custom path for gamecube is USB1.

      Should be USB1/Games

That's how mine has been set: usb1:/games/

Sorry. I said above that I put wad manager in the wad folder, but that is incorrect. I put it in the "apps" folder.

My drive is 32kb cluster size unless EaseUs doesn't work. I formatted my thumb drive with easeus the same way and that works fine

      Use the edit button please

Edit: wow.... I used the method on the first page of this thread to check cluster size and it appears to be 64kb.

This is surprising because when I format these drives with EaseUS, I'm able to set everything correctly including cluster size, but then when I toggle to fat32 before finalizing, the cluster size drop down disappears. I've assumed to this point that it was retaining my change to 32kb, but apparently not.

How do set cluster size on fat 32 in EaseUS??

Edit: and, less importantly, why is my thumb drive working then?

With larger HDD EaseUS always set it to 64KB cluster size and thumb drive will be 32KB cluster or less, EaseUS set the cluster size by the size of the HDD, but if you reformat it with EaseUS you could choose the cluster size with EaseUS.
(EASEUS only lets you change your clustersize after wiping your disk, so you will have to backup everything first) or you could use Acronis Disk Director 11 Advanced : right click your disk/change cluster size/current cluster size: I use Acronis Disk Director 11 Advanced on three HDD to change it from 64KB to 32KB and I did not lose any data. Okay I'm having trouble to getting godzilla destroy all monsters melee to work, I tried every single way to convert and options, but when entering progressive mode it either freeze or shut the wii off. and when it loads after selecting the chars and stage at versus, it shows a green screen for a mil second and loops back into the intro/company logo and writing stuff. can someone help me out here?

What version DM are you using and what version of what loader are you trying to use?

im using DM v2.6 and I'm using the DM booter rev30 to load my gamecube games

Try one of the more updated loaders. DM Booter is old compared to DM 2.6.

Three other loaders that works well with 2.6 are in my signature.

GX and CGF loader still give the same results, and after updating the wiiflow dol, i couldn't even see the content in the option mode, so I tried changing the theme to see if it will show better, and then wiiflow keeps crashing "DSI error occured". Now it wont even load at all anymore..
