I backed up hdd and formatted it to 32kb clusters with Acronis, put a game back on for testing, black screen.

The fact that the hbc "blurb" for gx says I have an older version is disconcerting. Is that normal?

EDIT: What is the standard method for updating to r1208?

EDIT 2: The filetree gx created when ripping looks weird to me. All the games' folders have the game name spelled out in it's entirety while the iso itself is generic. Not sure if that's right...

Personally, I don't know any "standard" method. You must be asking if there's a way to update through the HBC or through the Loader itself like you can do with cfg loader.

About that, I do not know. I've always updated the SD card way.

No, that's what I want. How do you do that? How would you go about updating usb loader gx to r1208 on the sd card?

Turn off NMM, keep the settings default. You could also try DMToolbox to install or convert the game.
That is the only way right now to update GX, the meta was not updated so it will say the older version, but it is R1208, it is considered beta, so you cannot update from the wii wifi yet, like the other USB Loaders.
If you go to GX Settings / Credits it will show you the current version. Click on the star to go back
You could also edit the meta to say r1208.

meta.xml is a flat text file that has information required to tell HBC what to show, including the version number. If you don't like it showing the wrong version, then just edit the file to set it to the correct version number. It won't change how GX behaves, only what HBC shows.

Cwjakesteel, you might want to make mention in guide about the meta.xml issue (if you haven't already). You can list as a solution users can edit the meta.xml in Notepad, Wordpad or Notepad++ which will cause the Homebrew Channel to display the correct revision number of the loader.

Correction: I've been using easeUS to format, not Acronis. It's very difficult to tell with easeUS if you've gotten the 32KB formatting, but I got a game to work with a thumb drive, so it must've... Actually, it sort of almost worked -- the load times are atrocious (NBA Street Vol. 3.)

I've got a second, larger thumb drive with which I get a freeze in the percentage count-up while ripping games -- not sure what to make of that.

It looks like the issue is with my hdd external, and yet it worked fine back in the day for usb loading Wii games. Odd.

The bad load times are probably due to the drive, some drives will load slower than others. Of course it's also possible that your IOS 58 is either outdated or not there (I know with WiiMC my videos were very slow to respond to play, fast-forward, rewind etc etc before I installed IOS 58).

For the part about the drive working well with Wii games but having issues with GC games that's explained by the programs. Every program has different compatibility, just because your drive works good with program A doesn't mean it will behave the same with program B.

I posted a syscheck somewhere around here not more than a week ago and was given the all clear. How would I go about double checking IOS58?
    1. SNES_Master's Avatar

Run system check but press right until you see IOS 58 selected. Then post and let me know what it says. If sysCheck doesn't let you select IOS 58 then you don't have it.

Edit: after just looking at your post history and seeing your IOS 58 it looks like it's fine, so the issue is possibly the drive. Do you have the slow loading issue with more than just the 1 game you mentioned?

So far, with both games that I've tried with the working thumb drive. Slow as all get out to load. Once playing, the games run fine except I'm getting music stuttering in one of them.

I guess I could still try clearing out my 16gb sd, plug it into a usb converter piece and try usb loading from there. Would that be any different than simply loading gc from sd?

It would be probably just as slow, if not slower. If you have an SD card, why not use it in the SD slot natively and use DML? You can at least then use a class 10 card to speed things up a little.

Though, using a proper USB hard drive would be the fastest way to go (once again, using DM vs. DML in that case).

SD via USB converter won't work. Sd is still sd so it would need to be in the SD slot and you would need Dios Mios Lite for that.

With the rise of usb loaders you now have easy access to many games, but I've always lamented having to power down or reset the Wii to change games. I've recently discovered that usb loader gx has a setting to help with this, but I've only gotten it to work with Wii games as I don't know how to exit a gc game running via dios mios without powering down. How do I accomplish this?

Lol, sorry cwjakesteel, I forgot about the controller shortcuts...it's been a while since I used DM

@goathouse: Listen to the comment below, he knows more about DM than probably anyone else here

DM can do it: Look at page 1 for the shortcut combo, also enable PADhook in your USB Loader

Hello? Gamecube short cuts to reset the Wii to the system menu?

      Yes! Tell me more.

Enable PADhook, when playing a game press R, Z and Start (simultaneously I think). This will reboot your Wii to the Wii menu.
