4.3u Black screen on boot Brick

    Good Afternoon all,

Ok so Iit all started when I stumbled upon Letterbomb and decided to give it a try.

    1) Downloaded letterbomb and put it on SD
    =>Homebrew installed correctly
=>Bootmii installed as OS correctly , couldn't do boot 2 for whatever reason ( Because its a 4.3u? not sure about that anyway wasnt' an option)

I was under the impression that was all I had to do to play backups on my system besides getting myself a loader and my games backed up to a portable hard drive but my ignorance was quickly realized. Turned out to be much more to it. So I resulted to posting and being refered to the Softmod any wii guide. But before that I installed a few things off of the homebrew browser which I installed through the sd card. I put on wiixplorer, nes emulator and a snes emulator that I got off of the homebrew browser. Played a few classics and then decided to get back to work on the real deal at hand here. Playing backups of my games through the nice little interface I seen called wiiflow or coverfloader or whatever.

I proceeded with the guide and completed chapter 2 with no issues , all checksums were good to go for the usa modpack and the cios pack and none of the wads failed to install and I was really starting to get the sensation of sweet sweet success. I have no use for the update or the shop channel and skipped both of those. I didn't change my region either.

    On to step 3
"WARNING: This is a version patched System Menu, running on a version patched
cios60. NEVER replace cios60-v54321 with ios60-6174. Doing so will
brick your wii if you update from Nintendo. Never update from Nintendo, don't MUCK up cios60-v54321. You have
    been warned."

I had no idea what the above was all about and hoped it didn't affect me and moved on.

I am now back in homebrew channell and there are a few new things in there now, one of which is the priloader. I select it press + and then a and get an error that was similar but not exactly to the following.

es_identify failed error -1017 mission aborted

I can't be 100% about this whole thing except for 1017 and mission aborted for sure. It happened pretty fast. Unfortunately I tried it twice after the second time my wii froze after exiting the screen that had that message. So I'm looking at the homebrew channel but nothing will respond and controller is off. I hard reset and get no video or sound but the system checks the tray for a disc for a few secs and then it just sits there with nothing on the screen but blackness.

I spent some time on the forums and tried the following.

    1) Removing SD card => failed
    2) Holding reset before powering up to see if priloader somehow installed => Failed
    3) Took a game disc out of tray and tried sd card with nothing but the files I backed up => Epic Fail

So is this a euchre , am I beyond the point of no return. Someone use the force to unleash my wii from the depths of blackness for the love of god. It was going real smooth up to this point. Well Merry christmas and hope you guys have some suggestions for me cuz I'm definitely going to try this again with the another wii as soon as I can so it would be nice to know what I did wrong. Thanks. GSAW out

ok so here it is , my wii is toast but the things I did wrong were

    A) Didn't format card before I started step 2
    B) Didn't use a sd card, I used an 8gb sdhc card

I am going to get another wii, and another card (Sandisk preferably) and start the process again. I'm hoping if the above issues are not present I won't brick my next wii . What do u guys think , is that what caused the problem ?

    a few things to consider...:
    1) some of the newer controllers WONT work in HBC or apps.. you may need to get a old used one from a pawn shop or wherever they are cheap..
    2) When the guide says format.. it means FORMAT
    3) A 8gb sdhc card IS NOT a 2gb sd card..
    4) If something fails you CANT just continue on.. you need to figure it out... dont skip steps..

All in all you set yourself up to fail from the start because you didnt have what you needed and rushed through it all... read the guide a few times before actually doing it..

Did I come off like a jerk?? Read more here

It only took you 16 minutes to throw in the towel? There are some great unbricking people on here that may be able to help you out.

I'm not giving up if there is anything I can try short of buying a modchip then so be it but I worked on it for about 6 hours before this thread was even created lol 16 mins. In any case I'm back in action with another 4.3u wii and I do have a 2gb sd sandisk this time so I would expect to have better luck . As for the other wii I will do whatever I can to get it back up and working so any suggestions would be fantastic. Unfortunately from what I understand my options are limited. Keep up the good work guys. This site is awesome.

I agree with everything you said except #4, I didn't fail and continue on , everything went smooth up untill installing the priloader which gave me an error message and then proceeded to freeze and brick. Now is it to a certainty that the 8gb sdhc card caused this error? No prob not, if the card wasn't going to work the installation of the wads would have screwed up not just the priiloader and I didn't have a single error up untill that point. I do think the lack of a format was what screwed me but in any case I am doing everything all over again so if the results are the same then it will be time to sit back and figure out whats causing the issue. Thanks again for the comments and I hope to be up and running within the hour.
