It sounds more like a banner brick and not a theme brick as he told you. If it was a simple theme brick then updating would have replaced the corrupt theme and left you with a working Wii. A banner brick is when a bad channel is installed and prevents the Wii from booting into the System Menu. A brick like that can't be fixed with an update. Unless someone has a better idea, I think the only hope is modchip. and remove the bad wad or force a format.

edit: btw, you let it go long enough for the update.

I use a Wasabi DX. It's easy to install with no soldering involved. Before you buy one though, burn this to disk, start you Wii into maintenance mode using SaveMiiFrii, put the disk in and see if MMM starts. If it does then the Wii has cIOSCORP or DARKCORP installed. If that is the case then you wont need a modchip.

Get the modchip, then use the netflix disc to load data managment and install Indiana PWNS or other disc exploit. This is found in the sticky above regarding modchips and recovery menu.

A wasabii dx would be fine. Make sure the drive is old enough to read burned media, or you'll need another drive. Any modchip compatable with your drive will work. The 4th gen are easy, they just plug onto the ribbon cable from the drive, and work on all drives that can read dvds.

It needs to be on a good quality DVD-R. Use imgburn at a speed of 2x.
