How do I recover it ?

I'm trying to fix my wii.

    It's running 4.3e - it doesn't have HomeBrew, there's no BootMii.

I tried loading WiiSports Plus and Crazy Mini Golf and after going into the disc channel, the wii just freezes (the remote "1" LED goes out, the black screen, no response pressing reset).

Loading Channel Mii just causes it to reboot, as does the Shopping Channel, Weather and News.

There are no newer updates, so trying to update won't get anywhere.

I can't load BootMii, as it seems, even if I had the Lego Indiana Jones, it wouldn't load anyway (due to black screen as above).
BannerBrick doesn't work (I get Error 004 - System Files are corrupt, when trying to load the list of SD card files).

I've already tried a factory reset as well.

Will SaveMiiFrii help if, the latest update is already installed (go from 4.3 to 4.3)?

Is there any other SD card based methods that might help bring this back?

What about downgrading to 4.2 or 4.1 - is that possible when a game won't load ?

It may have been soft modded, I'm not sure, it was bought second hand and came as is.

I'm leaning towards it was soft modded, because I doubt the software in the console would have end up this bad by itself.

Any ideas on how it would be recovered?

You can't load original games through the disk channel? This isn't sounded good so far. Turn off the Wii and back on and watch and see how many times the DVD light flashes. With any luck it will flash twice.

Also remove the SD card if you have one in.

Light flashes just once - it looks to have been formatted using the format option as there was no settings in place.

    What are the options?

Try holding reset as you power it on and see if Priiloader or Preloader starts.

Sounds like the Dop-IOS bug. If it is, the only way to fix it is by either running a system check in Dop-Mii or by flashing the NAND. The biggest problem here is that the OP has no way to run Dop-mii (no BB2, CB2, can't run game exploits). What's your Wii's serial number? If it's old enough to support boot2 Bootmii it can be repaired.

Edit: Try what Krafter said first and see if you can access Priiloader.

Tried game just then with no SD Card, no go.
Reset while power on, the health and safety screen loads (I held it in all the way from power on). No Priiloader.

The serial is LAH10169XXX is that boot2? How will boot2 work - I'll try it anyway?

Yes I believe it is. We have members here on Wiihacks capable of flashing your NAND with boot2 Bootmii which is likely the only way to repair your Wii. Based on your serial number I would recommend you contact Bad_Ad84 as he's capable of doing this type of work and is located nearest to you.
