Wii works with component cables not composites. Black screen on start up/but sound.

I have just bought a wii on ebay with 3.4 firmware.

The wii doesnt work with normal composite cables.... Only sound no video black screen on start up.....The thing comes with a warranty... It was listed as faulty....

HD component cable are suppose to get the video up.....

If it is stuck in progressive scan then would this be the usual behaviour..... I was thinking maybe using the hd leads and then trying to reset the video mode to default...... or maybe there is something a bit more sinister going on... Any idea?

This wii is a virgin so no bootmii or hb installed....

This has been posted a few times (pretty sure you were even in the thread).

But this can be a problem with the AV encoder, there is no settings to change to fix it. Hell the wii will output regardless of what the settings are (in my experience).

I'd just use the component cables and be happy with the bargain (assuming it was cheap as it was faulty)

Just under 50 inc p+p (Is that a good price for just the console)
Krank did say it sounded like the av encoder (take that is hard to fix)

    Cheers for the reply.

I think I know which thread you are talking about but the guy was talking about a wii that had been modded already I think....

AV encoder is unrelated to softmods, its a hardware issue.

50 for just the console is alittle steep imo.... but its cheaper than a "working" one, which yours is... with the right cables.

I generally pay around 30-40, alittle more if it includes cables/remotes.

I know its a hardware issue just wondered what it would cost to fix.
I have been looking for months on ebay alot of them have been going for 40 - 50 (disc can not be read). Apart from the ones that are completely bricked that go for less. Just orded some component cables....

Oh, yes I generally buy totally bricked ones... as that means once fixed the DVD drive works with no additional costs (as I repair them myself).

Regarding cost to fix, replacing the AV encoder id probably charge same sort of price as fixing a brick as its about the same amount of work. Component cables are your best bet.

Out of interest what do you charge for repairing a bricked wii?

    Nand reflash - 30 + postage

Postage is considerably cheaper if you send just the motherboard.

I'd stick with the component cables
