Bricked wii - already solved, but still wondering what the problem was

A few months ago, I decided to update the softmod of a friend of mine. He didn't have priiloader installed, so I decided to install it. My friend was on 3.3E however and there are no hacks for that system menu (btw, i have always wondered how these are made?), so I needed to change that.

Off course, I should have just used the 4.1 firmware updater from one of the softmod guides. However, I am a big fan of 3.2, so I decided to use the Fully Brick, Bootmii/boot2 installed but No Nand Backup? Solution Here! guide to install system menu 3.2E (yes, I know you aren't meant to do it that way).

I installed 3.2E and everything was working just fine. I rebooted several times, no problem. And then, I removed the SD card... and things stopped working. With the SD card (with cboot2 on it), it would boot fine (somehow it didn't start WAD manager, but the system menu). Without, the screen would just stay black.

In the end, I solved it by installing 4.1E. But still, I keep wondering what happened?

Possibly you did not install ios30-v1040, I don't know if 3.2 will run on the updated ios30. Cboot2 can boot the system menu when there is no system ios, removing the sd-card would prevent this from working. Probably something like that.

Yeah, seems like the most likely explanation to me. Thanks mauifrog. Another mistery solved :P

I get this all the time, as mauifrog said, its when the system ios is removed.

Because i buy alot of bricks and thats generally what people do, once i have installed bootmii as boot2 via nand programmer, the wii usually springs into life once i use cboot2
