    Possibly a brick, need help (4.2, softmod, PAL)

    Hey there,
    perhaps someone could help me with my problem.

    I've softmoded a virgin PAL 4.2 Wii (black) and everything went smooth.

    This is what I did:

    - installed Bootmii as IOS;
    - made a NAND backup;
    - uninstalled ios249 and installed cios38rev14;
    - installed ios202, ios222, ios223 and ios70;
    - installed priiloader and enabled some standard hacks (no update, no health screen..);

    After that I went on and installed some wads and HB apps (N64 VCs, emulator forwarders, Triiforce, WinampRadio...) but it was all standard and PAL stuff.
    I've also installed forwarder for the USBloader GX and started using wbfs games from my USB FAT32 HDD. I've noticed that when running games from USB HDD my Wii sometimes crashes. But that happened only rarely and I was able to run the same game after reset.
    Of course I've only played PAL games and never did any updates. All was well until I got Mario Kart Wii. Since my Wii Game Manager crashed everytime I wanted to convert Mario Kart Wii ISO to wbsf (tried different downloads, all failed), I found a Mario Kart wbfs download and went for it.
    Put it on my disk, ran it and it worked. I played the game, unlocked some stuff and turned off the Wii. Next time everything was fine untill I tried to run Mario Kart Wii again. I went to USB loader GX, clicked on Mario Kart Wii....and BAM! Black screen of nothingness.
    Now when I turn on my Wii, there is no video or audio output and wiimotes won't sync (I can still boot up the console with a wiimote but that's about it).
    This is what I've tried:

    - reset, wait, turn off, wait, unplug, wait;
    - booting without SD and HDD;
    - using different cables and wiimotes;
    - holding reset when booting (does NOT go into Priiloader);
    - using a GC joypad on port 4 and holding all directions (probably didn't do it right);

    So this looks like a brick, right? Can I do anything with my NAND backup? Or in the worst case scenario, what would happen if I took my Wii back to the store, since it's still under warranty?

    Any kind of help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Well, good news is with a nand backup this Wii is repairable... even if the soldering is beyond your ability someone could do it. (assuming its a nand issue).

    Now, when you installed the wads and HB apps, did you reboot before playing mario kart? I want to confirm that the wads installed ok and worked after a reboot, this will rule out a bad wad (as it would of stopped it working before you played mario kart).

    Well, I can solder but the console is still under warranty. So I guess it would be better to try the official way first.

    There were no bad WADs, all of them were working. In fact, everything was working just fine.

    One thing that could happen is an auto update, since I had wireless still enabled. However I am 99% sure that I've disabled auto updating via Priiloader. Could it still happen?

    Auto updating doesnt happen, you have to select it and if it updated, it would work but just remove your mods.

    But you didnt answer my question.

    And I dont/wont promote fraud by taking back something that has the warranty terms voided and if you send it back to nintendo and they find it softmodded, they will refused to work on it anyway.

    I rebooted after installing WADs and HB apps and before playing Mario Kart.

    So if auto update didn't happen, wtf did?

    Not sure... My first guess would of been bluetooth.. but you say powering on the wii by remote works.

    Could be faulty Wifi module as the GC pad thing doesnt work if the wifi module is broken and results in a black screen... pretty rare tho.

    Thank you for your help.
    I guess I didn't hold down all 4 directions. And since I can't afford to open my official pad, that's about it.

    But yeah, I can power up the console with the wiimote.

    So what's the deal with restoring NAND if Bootmii is IOS?

    Well, its either:

    • Wifi module is faulty - GC pad thing WONT work and will look like a total brick
    • NAND corrupt - Looks the same as above

    From what had actually happened and seems everything was fine with your wad/HB installation... it still sounds more like the wifi module. Failing that, NAND needs reflashing.

    You would need a nand programmer - an infectus 2 modchip can do this on the cheap (about 25-30) and you will need the ability to solder it in and remove it once you are done. Or you could send it to me and I charge 30 + return shipping and use a professional programmer.

    Option 1 - good for learning and you have a backup if the same happens in future.
    Option 2 - Same sort of money as option 1, but guarenteed not to screw it up and if it is just the wifi module I have spares (and I test it before reflashing the nand)

    Option 2 depends where you are in the world really, as shipping can get expensive.
