Well updating the WiiKey has not made any difference to being able to run backups or originals unfortunately

Can you try a network update to 4.3?

Without lifting the nand, you are running out of options. 4.3 isn't ideal system menu to be running, but if you can get it working and booting games, you should hopefully be able to install bootmii when hackmii is updated and downgrade to 4.1

Well I am kinda reluctant to try that, reason being is I was advised the exact same thing for 4.2 using network update, it installed no problem but solved nothing. So I am thinking it will result in the same thing but have even less chance then of being rehacked for a long time.

If you have another drive, you could try to take that wiikey out.

I did try removing the wiikey just recently, but it made no difference to running any games.

The thing that surprises me is I seem to be the only person in the world who has suffered this particular problem with a Wii

    abstractrobbie,
what modchip is installed in ur Wii console ? is it functional ? with the advantage living in China-PRC, u could buy a D2A compatible modchip at ~rmb$80--120.
don't listen to the guy about returning the console to Ninty-China for repair. what could really happen may be a replacement of a KOR-motherboard, after region change (at the guy's backyard) to ur favor. u've a better Wii motherboard of early version which is BootMii boot2-able. Don't give it up.
worst to worst, apply NAND Flashing (ie. "Fried", in ur word.) to save ur Wii. with some luck, u should be able to locate a capable game shop (in main cities, China).

I have a Mk1 WiiKey installed, it is functional as it updated to the beta 1.99 firmware the other day.
How can I flash the Nand though, I dont have any idea how I can do that, we haven't found a shop here that can either, all they do is chip in store, I am in the 3rd biggest city in China too.
