txt file contains Wii serial number and region settings. If your existing one isnt found it will use a generic USA one. Seeing as you are from the USA anyway, there is no issue with this.

It shouldnt be... it should create a setting.txt file that will work (wont have your wii serial, but thats not a huge issue).

but without the source i couldnt confirm this..

    try reading this post:
    http://www.wiihacks.com/bricked-wii-...tml#post376398

it uses another formatter than i KNOW for sure creates the setting.txt file.
if that one works, then post back here. else just restore your backup

did it, the wii rebooted but it's on a scrambled screen. i can see thru the scrambles "correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page" and "need help" and i can see the wiimote cursor

yeah, thats because the formatter in that thread is Europe not America and you installed american wads. therefore your wii is semi bricked (no big deal)

but this proves its a hardware failure, there shouldnt be a scrambled screen.

You need to to install cIOS and change your settings.txt, or run the formater again the 4.1u version- but don't use the installed settings.txt, since it is now pal.

I am thinking we need to add a trucha ios to the format packs to simplify this situation in the future. Probably change it to ios36-v1042 or add ios16-v257. To bad the formater won't install a fakesigned ios.

you cant change the setting.txt after using the formatter, the file permissions are messed up.

a picture of what you mean by "scrambled" would probably help.

and if after restoring your nand you cant go into settings, then you were semi bricked from the start.... but that wasnt in your original post.
