OK, 2 things:
I tried running this, and it sat on the first wad for 2 hours. I think it froze...
Also, once I re-format (if I ever succeed), can I use a game to update me to 3.1 instead of 4.1, then manually run waninkoko's updater? I don't have a game that does 4.1, and there aren't any rental places within 30 minutes.

If it sticks at installing the wad, it doesnt like your sd card or the format its in.

then do I really have to format my SD card? I have another one the wii luuurves.
and what about using Boom Blox to update to 3.1 then waninkoko? will that brick mii?

going to 3.1 should be fine... you wont be on 3.1 tho, you will be on 4.1 with a bunch of old ios's and old channels.
just update the ios's and the channels with dop-mii and you should be fine.

this seems to have nothing to do with liking my SD card. it's frozen on me twice now, different cards.

Its the SD card.
trying 2 cards is no where near enough. if you look in this thread some guy had to try 5 to find one that worked.

Great guide. I am trying it out just so I can say I did and get myself familiar with the process. I do have a question.
I was following a thread the other day where a user had a black screen problem. He restored his system from a NAND backup but still had a black screen. Streamlinehd, as a last resort, suggested he follow this guide and worked after that. No more black screen. What does this guide cover that a NAND restore cant fix?

Just reinstalls everything from scratch, if the guys backup restore didnt work, sounds like there was something wrong with his backup.
You can use nand formatter on a completely blank chip and result in a working system (you will need to use 2.0 tho and the setting.txt creator thats in this thread somewhere)

Looks like this might solve my problem. I tried my best to remove all the homebrew and hacks from my system because I need to send it out for repair (bad GPU). The problem is, as I discovered while investigating more, is that Nintendo can still spot a hacked wii using the uid.sys file.
Some people have said that this makes the Wii impossible to revirginize because it leads to a chicken-or-egg problem. If I use homebrew to restore my uid.sys, then the uid.sys has logged that homebrew. I'd argue though that as long as that piece of homebrew didn't need to be uninstalled, and possibly if it had the user terminate by pulling power when it was done, there would be no way for the uid.sys to log it.
Obviously, most tutorials suggest to have BootMii as boot2, but this creates a problem for revirginization. If I run reformatter and BootMii is still loaded as boot2, I need to remove BootMii which then gets logged to the uid.sys. That is, if Reformatter doesn't touch boot2, and leaves BootMii there.
What I would like to know is, does Reformatter also format boot2?
Also, I've read that the uid.sys also contains information of factory loading software and diagnostics. Does Reformatter replicate this data?
Basically, I would like to be able to run banner bomb, load reformatter.elf, and have my wii virginized. Pull power when it gets done (because uid.sys might get written to during any form of normal termination), and have a virgin wii with signs of the original factory work. It would be even better if it wrote information to UID showing game activity (of course making sure that the time-stamp shows the game being used AFTER its official release date, and being run on its proper firmware (no Metroid Other M on a 4.2U system).
Anyway, it might be riskier, but it would be great to go back to a fresh Wii before sneding it off to be repaired.

thanks for posting this tutorial.
i've been trying to get this to work on about 3 different SD cards. i recently bought the sandisk wii 2gb sd card. now when i run the formatter it seems to install all of the IOS wads but it Freezes at Installing /wad/IOS60-1.WAD.
I was wondering is this still an issue with my SD card or does it have something to do with the other files included in the WAD folder.
thanks a lot
