I also have the same problem and i didn't try and install any updates after buying it. It worked fine in the shop but get the stripes when Itried to connect to at home. My TV is multi system and switches to NTSC automatically when wii plugged in. Have tried switching TV to PAL but same no joy.Can it be the cable. They tested it with their own cable connected to their tv. Also just wondering if wii was somehow configured for use with component video cable at the shop and not the standard out of box connector? ie is it possible that it is sending a proggresive scan signal and the normal connector cannot handle it?

I suppose it is possible. Your issue sounds like a display issue, not a brick issue.

I just tried using a component cable but still get the stripes
Somebody suggested that something may have come loose during transit...wonder if it is a good idea to get it opened up and check?
    What are my options?

Not sure, if it was just a video issue I would think you would have sound. Try pushing A few times and see if any sound comes on. Other than that, is it possible to take it back to the store?

Unfortunately its going to be tough for me to take it back to the store as i bought it in Malayasia while on holiday and I am now back in Sri Lanka where I live. One thing that comes to mind is that the sales guy did mention that it had the latest update... 4.2? I have read of numerous issues that others have had after/while upgrading. However I didn't get a chance to run anything on the machine that might have messed it up other than when the saleman demoed the unit to me to showme that it was working.
