Check for bootmii/boot2 - double flashes in the DVD slot on power up.
Check for preloader - hold reset as Wii starts.

I'm liking SGU, bit darker then the others but it keeps me coming back for the next episode.

Re the Wii, you are going to struggle to fix this before 4.2 comes out. So is this black screen from boot or is it actually going to Health & Safety screen then going to Black screen?

You said it was 4.1 at first.

    Now it's 4.0.? That's me confused.

New Super Mario Bros Wii is a 4.1 game. Not sure if it'll fix the problem though as black screen at start-up is not generally an update fixable brick.

You could try autobooting SSBB with your drivekey, use the smash stack exploit to install HBC and then run Loadmii to install cIOS and re-install the System Menu.

Wait. The title says you have no hard or softmod in the console. If thats the case, send it back to nintendo and they will fix the problem basically free of charge.

That would be a great solution, thanks Jason. I always think of the fix and never of sending it back. Maybe it's still in warranty too?

Well I will explane why I said this. My sisters wii just bricked simply by unplugging it from the outlet. She has nothing done to her (as much as I told her I would do it for free) but I told her she needs to get that standby turned off as it overheats the console. Well shes had her wii for over a year and never got an extended 3 year warrenty on it through the store that she got it from. Well just by her unplugging the console, it bricked. She called nintendo and told them about it and one of the first things she was asked was if there were any modifications done to it. Ofcource she said there werent any because she has no clue on any of that stuff. She sent the console to nintendo (had to pay shipping). They sent her a brand new console already up to date along with all the cords and reinbursted her for the shipping. There was also another time where she told me that she thinks a mouse ate through her sensor bar cord. I told her that she can easily get a new one basically anywhere but she called nintendo and they sent her a brand new sensor bar free of charge. She even told them exactly what happened.
