Try to format the sd card and try again.

You can start from step4 of the 3.1-4.1 guide below. Just be sure to install ios60patched before upgrade or preloader.

What programs should I install to safeguard my 4.2U mod Wii? I have gone through Messie's tut to the point where I can play burnt games via NeoGamma. If I want to use my USB HDD and create custom Channels for some games should I install any program to prevent bricking?

    Thanks

Custom channels have a risk of banner bricks so preloader will be a fine solution for brick protection, provided you don't update your Wii when bricked you will be fine. Bootmii/boot2 would be better but only old Wiis can have it.
Not really doing much Wii stuff these days.

Which preloader would work best and do you have a small tut to install?

    Thanks

I installed Priiloader the night before last.

Download the app, run with HBC, done. It's quite straightforward.

    Preloader/Priiloader - WiiBrew

    You'll need hacks for 4.2
    Preloader/hacks - WiiBrew

Copy and paste the code for your region into a text file and name it hacks.ini and place it at root of your SD card.
