For some reason, when i downloaded those files, Firefox put them in the temp folder. Not sure why, maybe its the tar extension. Thanks for the files mauifrog, they will come in handy.

That has more to do with settings and pathing in Firefox than mediafire. For example, when I downloaded them on Win7 via Chrome, it put them automatically into my Downloads folder.

When you download it, if you select open it goes in temp, if you save it goes in downloads.

I did select save. went to my downloads folder but it wasn't in there. I had to run Firefox, select tools, downloads, then right click, open containing folder.

Then you need to change your settings in firefox and select a proper download folder

I downloaded the files (5 elf files + readme) and tried each one (changed the name to ppcboot.elf in bootmii folder - tried 5 times) - I still get a black screen (in starts as a green-snow for about half a second before becoming black) so it seem they do try to load automatically.
initially I did not have bootmii.ini, but I downloaded it and checked that it works (by autoboot into HBC with 5 sec delay) - then I made sure there is no autoboot.
does the .elf files fit some specific systems such as for a software version (such as 4.1U vs 4.1E)?

Of your BT module was bad the system menu and all system channels would load to a black screen. You can test the BT module further by using a GC controller to load the recovery, menu via savemiifrii which should load with a bad BT module, priiloader also would work as it does. Also with a GC contoler you can load the hbc and load a Wii game. Wii games will not load with a bad BT module.

Consider replacing the BT module with a working unit. There are another issue that can cause the BT module not to work, but are related the the main board and not the module it self.

Thank you very much for the help I got so far.
I have ordered a Gamecube controller. I assume it will take some time (up to 3 weeks) to get it.
I will update more when I get the controller.

Hi again, I finally got the GC controller and used it to navigate in the priiloader into the autoboot option: it is (and was) set to system menu, but system menu is not loading. I also tried to navigate to 'Launch Title' and selected each of the channels but none of them loaded. I even got an option of loading a game from the DVD - but also this didn't work.
so I asume that as you said earlier - the BT module is bad. how can I check this further?
