Semi Bricked..system files corrupted, can't backup NAND, can't load HackMii installer

OK, I could use some help here. My Wii has been soft-modded for a while, but now things are getting strange. HBC and other softmod apps were freezing or going to blackscreen, so i started trying to update (at first with ModMii and then other tools) and am now at the point where i have no clue how to proceed.

I can boot into the system fine (system is 4.2U) although everytime I boot into the system i get the message 'Unable to Load Mii Channel Data). Also when i try to go to the Wii settings i get the message that my system files are corrupted.

I can run BannerBomb to get to Multi-Mod-Manager v13.4. From MMM the ModMii instructions told me to install 6 WAD files (IOS31-64-v3608, IOS33-64-v3608, IOS34-64-v3608, IOS35-64-v3608, IOS36-64-v3608, and IOS58-64-v6176). Doing this works fine for 5 of them, but one fails. I get a failure on IOS36-64-v3608.wad - next to the file it states 'Title (-1035)'.

Because the IOS36 wad failed, i tried the 'Install & Patch IOS36' function from MMM. This starts to run and then freezes during the operation.

Using the 'Display Wii System Info' function on MMM, it tells me I am on System Menu 4.2U on IOS70 (when trying to exit out of this screen, my system hangs, forces me to reboot).

I can use App Manager to try to load apps from MMM, but they don't work correctly. I tried running SysCheck, I tell it to check all IOS, it starts and hangs on the first step (Testing IOS9 vulnerabilities). HackMii installer doesn't load, i get a black screen with a few green lines throughout the screen. Dop-Mii loads to a black screen.

I can get into priiLoader or BootMii ... but it doesn't seem to do me any good. When i try to take a NAND backup from BootMii, it works for a while, i get a few messages regarding bad blocks, and then it hangs.

Specs from priiloader: IOS v70, Systemmenu v481, priiloader v0.4 (r78)

    Specs from BootMii: BootMii v1.2, SysMenu: 4.2U boot1b boot2v2

Really, I just want to get HBC installed (somewhere in the process of messing with this stuff it was removed) and running again. The DVD-drive on the Wii is shot, but i was hoping that I could get homebrew back up and running. Is there anything i can do to get HBC running again?

Looks like this is a launch day wii w/ bootmii already installed as boot2. Try downloading http://www.mediafire.com/?vegax6lnnw9ctc0 - place on newly formatted 1 or 2 gig sd card, and launch wii. Should go right into hackmii installer w/ enough permissions to do what is necessary.

If that doesn't work, you might be a candidate for Ohneswanzeneggr - a utility by GiantPune that will help you rebuild your nand. But before you go down that road, wait here for advice from mauifrog.

Thanks for the quick reply ... I tried your first suggestion ... no dice. It actually boots me into the regular system menu, not into BootMii (or I assume the HackMii installer setup to run under BootMii).

As for the ohneschwanzenegger program, i have it, but was under the assumption that i would need a NAND backup for this to work. My NAND backups hang every time i run them.

Sorry if there is any confusion in this thread. Blu, thanks for your quick reply. I replied back but initially but the system told me my message needed to be approved by a mod before it would post. That message said that using the Bootmii files you provided resulted in me being booted into the system menu like normal. However, i noticed that i didn't have the Bootmii files in the correct location on the SD card, so you can ignore my previous post about it booting into the system menu. Instead, it just hangs on a black screen.

As for ohneswanzenegger, i thought you could only use that if you had a NAND backup, and my system hangs when creating NAND backups. If there is a way to use this without a full NAND backup that could possibly help me.

Post sd:\installer.log, and any other log you may have here.

    Format your sd card

    Extract
    System Menu-4.1u-449.zip
    and
    ModPack.zip
    to sd:\
    Password = www.wiihacks.com

Put the sd card in the wii, it should load to wiimod.
Load the wadmanager and install all the wads, install all the 4.1u wads
Install the priiloader via wiimods app loader

Let me know how that goes.

OK, i formatted my card and then loaded the files that Maui sent, WiiMod wouldn't load directly. I had to setup Bannerbomb, then use App manager to load WiiMod. I then proceeded to follow the instructions, used WadManager to install all wads from the root wad directory (30 wads), and then all the wads from the system menu 4.1 wad directory (3 wads). This went fine, there were no issues that i saw. I tried to install priiloader but in hung the wii, so i rebooted.

Upon reboot, i now have new channels for WiiFlow, Configurable USB Loader, USB Loader GX, Neogamma, and Backup HBC. The Wii now reports it is version 4.1U. I started Backup HBC to see if it would run, and it did so i tried to install priiloader from there. This worked, however it told me 'update done, exiting to loader... waiting 5s...' and then nothing changed, so i had to reboot again.

So i then tried the new channels as a test run to see what works and what doesn't:

Configurable USB Loader - Loads to a black screen, then exits back to system menu.
NeoGamma - Loads to a black screen, then exits back to system menu.
USB Loader GX - Loads to the loading splash screen, then to a black screen, then exits back to system menu.
Wiiflow - Loads to the loading splash screen, then to a black screen, then exits back to system menu.

I do have an external drive, formatted correctly with WBFS that i used with loaders in the past. The drive was connected and powered on when i tried to run these channels.

Both MMM and priiLoader report that i am now running IOS60, not IOS70 as i was before. Also the issues with the 'unable to load mii channel data' and the 'system files are corrupted' messages are now gone, so that is some good news i hope.

Extract app pack v4.zip to sd:\
    Test the channels again.
    Test the wii settings.
    Test hackmii installer again
    Test syscheck again.
    Test nand backup again.

OK, I was able to run both syscheck and hackmii installer, here are the results:

    syscheck.csv

    Spoiler

    installer.log:

    Spoiler

    Testing Results:

    SUCCESS!!!
All Loader app channels now function properly.
Backup HBC (1.0.3 on IOS61 v22.30) runs fine and can run the loaders from SD card without issue.
I was able to make a successful NAND backup,

Now for the strange ... The newly-installed standard HBC (1.1.0 on IOS61 v22.30) loads but shows no icons. Just for fun, i started to click the bubbles and magically the right half of my screen loaded with app info to where it looked like i clicked on a hidden icon. I see 'HackM' at the top, and 'no d' in the middle, and then a 'Delete' button and the start of a second button at the bottom of the screen. I'm guessing i somehow clicked the HackMii installer icon even though i couldn't see any icons.

Also, trying to load the channel loaders (i.e. outside of HBC) without the SD card inserted just loads back to the system menu. I'm unsure why that is. Is this expected?

Regardless, the fact that the Backup HBC is running and loaders are running is great news. Big thanks to Maui and Blu for helping out so quickly. It's appreciated.

That's because those channels are forwarders I.e. they point to a specific app on the sd card. If the file isn't there, then it just reboots to the wii menu.

Sent from my A75 using WiiHacks, excuse grammar errors

This is strange, never seen it before
    Installer: 46
ios46 is a korean ios only, and ifaik, hackmii has not used it, now it does. Also strange that the new hbc is running on ios61, since you have ios58 and it should default to that. Also strange that apps are loading from old HBC, but not the new HBC, they should be the same. I guess the question is how far to you want to take this? Since you can now make a nand backup, the simplest next step is to make new nand backup and format the nand.bin with ohneswanzenager, then install system menu 4.3 with ohneswanzenager. This should give you a fresh 4.3 menu to be hacked without issue.

Thanks Maui for all your help ... i think for now i will leave it as it is ... as long as things are running again, I'm happy. My son played for about 6 hours, the system froze once but other than that there were no issues. If things start to go back downhill i will revive this thread and look at making a fresh nand for 4.3 with ohneswanzenager.

    Cheers everyone for the help!
