Blocking the shop channel update

Everyone knows, the #1 reason most people update the wii is to get that stupid shopping channel to work. Today I ran a small test, I took shop channel v16 and opened it up in showmiiwads. I then patched the version # to v54321. Guess what? The outdated shop channel worked just fine, at least it loaded and I could browse everything. I did not attempt to buy anything, but it seems that by doing this people could avoid the update prompt from Nintendo indefinably. Then only update the channel when there was a real need to do so. This seems like it would work with any title, be it ios, channel, system menu, etc.

    Thank you for continuing to experiment and to share your results with us, mauifrog. I wanted to experiment too and after many unsuccessful bids on used and refurb Wiis, I finally got a 4.2 Wii (I am not touching my 3.2U).

    Anyway, after it arrived, I softmodded my new purchase, got it setup with a HDD, and ended up giving the whole setup away to a local family who lost everything in a recent fire (the San Bruno gas explosion, if you followed it in the news).

    So, I guess I will continue to live vicariously through your adventures. Thanks again.

    You patched the shop channel version number or the IOS the channel uses?

    I patched wiishop channel v16 to v54321, running on ios61.

    So... what is the purpose of the updated shop channels? Trying to get users to update?

    The purpose of the shop channel update is to force users to update their wii, and possibly remove any exploits from the shop channel.
