BP does not suck... its the way they handle things....
I cannot believe nobody ever thought to install a shut off valve when running the pipeline. Regardless if it wasn't mandated at the time of construction, or the cost. There is no reason this crisis should even be taking place. I am sure they didn't think it would last for ever, with no way to stop the flow for even maintainance.
