Now, now... I know we still have a great number of hours to go until 2011. However, as I most likely am not online this whole day, this is my post to wish everybody a Happy New Year, and a lot of fun tonight with fireworks and everything (and perhaps a few beers? :p). :D

2010 has been a very good year to me. Very few low grades, finished my exams and received my credentials, Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been released (:o), joined WiiHacks on the 23th of May, and most importantly, the heart-transplantation for my grandfather was succesful. Everything was just about right, and I had a great time here on WiiHacks this year, and I'll probably also enjoy my stay here in 2011.

To every active member and to all moderators, thank you all so for a pleasant stay here on WiiHacks so far. All of you have done nice work here, and I want to thank the moderators in particular for having so much patience with the newbies who are lazy, and expect everything to be answered. Also thanks to some of the moderators here who gave me advice here and there. It's all really appreciated. :)

I don't really know what to say from here, or what to talk about, but hereby I wish everybody and their family a happy, healthy and lucky 2011. I seriously wish all of you the best, and by the way: come back to WiiHacks with ten fingers, not nine, or perhaps without any hands at all. :p

It's been really great so far,
Bandicoot :)

I can't believe this. How come that all of the stuff I have fails to work so early? I have two harddrives in my computer: a master harddrive on which Windows 7 is installed with 120GB of space, and a slave harddrive on which I save about all of my data and files with 1TB of space. Yesterday, the slave harddrive failed for some reason. Some of my data is lost, but there's a fair amount of data I still have on my external harddrive. Sadly, I haven't back-upped any school related files since the end of november, and I also lost some video-projects as well.

I have tried all recovery tools I know off, various SATA cables and inputs on my motherboard, and even different computers. The BIOS still sees both harddrives, but once in Windows, it just doesn't show up, whatever I try. All EASEUS applications seem to not recognize the broken harddrive, either. Really only the BIOS does, and that's something I still am struggling over. Because of this, I'm almost sure there is a way to get the important files off of there, and perhaps re-format it if possible after I have everything I need.

I have tried a lot of things, but nothing really worked. I haven't tried putting it in the freezer yet, and I am not going to until there's no way to get in there. It's probably not something obvious, but if you have a lot of experience with harddrive recovery and/or file recovery, could you suggest all of the recovery tools you know off, and perhaps other actions which you think are worth a shot? You will have my thanks. :)

Wednesday, a friend told me his Wii was bricked because of something stupid his little sister has done. He softmodded his Wii like one year ago, and has never had any troubles. His little sister read on the internet that a patched version of IOS70 would allow here to run Virtual Console games from the SD Card Channel. She tried this out without any permission from my friend, but it didn't work (or so she told). She decided to delete IOS70 and the System Menu to start all over again. Something unexpected happened: the Wii didn't boot...

So, I told my friend that day that I can fix this issue, because I knew he has BootMii/Boot2 installed as he bought his Wii in 2007. Yesterday, I went to his place, and ran Multi-Mod-Manager via Boot2. It booted properly as expected. I selected IOS249 to be sure I was using a working IOS and installed IOS60, followed by System Menu 4.1. I restarted the Wii, but for some strange reason the Wii still didn't boot. I ran Multi-Mod-Manager again, but installed IOS70 and System Menu 4.2 this time. I restarted the Wii, but still no luck.

After trying to install a System Menu with Dop-Mii, WAD Manager and AnyRegion Changer 4.1 (which all failed), I tried to boot a game in Configurable USB Loaderr. The Wii froze after selecting Super Mario Galaxy. I then tried to install a WAD of IOS248[57] via Multi-Mod-Manager, in the hope to get a game running, but the WAD simply didn't install. To be sure it was not a cIOS issue, I considered installing IOS58 (he didn't have it yet), but that also failed. Things really started to weird me out from here.

I opened up SaveGame Manager GX, back-upped all his savegames and Mii Characters and placed them on the computer. Luckily, he had a NAND back-up which was able to save him. After restoring, I installed the missing (c)IOSes, restored his savegames and installed the rest of the applications you would install when softmodding. We have tested some games about 1 hour long, and it seems to work again.

I seriously do not understand what I have done wrong. I am clueless. All his (c)IOSes were still installed, but I couldn't install a thing, boot a game or run the System Menu. This clearly shows that a NAND back-up has to be made, no matter if you have BootMii/IOS or BootMii/Boot2 installed: you don't know it what sort of way it may be of help in the future.

Today, I was looking around in the Newbie Discussion Forums to see what kind of help some new members were asking. Are you curious what I noticed? Most of the threads contain a question which are ALREADY answered like a 100 times. It's painful, and I'm seriously starting get (fill in to your own personal likings :)) at some members who don't search. My personal ''favourite'' is something like this:

hey i accidently updated my we now it wont play my backups and i really want to get everything working again could someone point me in the good direction thanks

To which I answer:

Bothered searching...?

Reply:

yes ive searched but could not find anything sorry (HERE COMES THE EXCUSE ) i am a noob and dont understand wii hacking

WHAT!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? There is a guide for firmware 4.3, which is stickied in the Recommended Guides. I do not know if some members expect us to spoon-feed them as well. The worst part is that I usually do so - I am going to stop with that. I can feel the pain of some members who are very active here, and especially the pain of the moderators. Another funny example is a game that is not working... They do manage to post a thread in the hope to get an answer, but they somehow NEVER SEEM TO FIND THE GUIDE! Does WiiHacks seriously need a big banner on the Home-page, with all questions being answered? Or would it also be an option for a member to SEARCH? Please, use this guide to get the best searchresults, people. It may even give you the answer faster, and it's so much less painful for members and the moderators!!

Now on to another part: the rules.
I see a lot of posts where the word ''download'' is included. Seriously, I have the feeling half of the members who just created an account do not read the rules before posting something. The rules are not written for nothing... Krafter once said something I will dearly remember:

Rules... Read them, love them and follow them...
Yes, that is right!!

Something else that I also see every now and then, is how people create a new thread, where they ask a question that can easily be asked in the guide's thread itself... What's wrong? Can you not just post your question there? WHERE IT BELONGS?

I know...I know... I do not think any new member will read this, but it is worth a shot. So, I hope that a ''n00b'' takes the time to read this, and save us from less frustration. It is not that we do not want to help you, but members are getting full of it that we're answering the same questions over and over again, while some of us may could've answered a healthy question, which has never or almost never been answered.

(Oh yeah, members are also supposed to post a welcomingspost: you will receive a lot of useful links!!!)

Links for n00bies that all contain a LOT of INFORMATION:

I powered on my Wii again, but nothing was responding. The screen stayed black, the WiiMotes could not connect, and there was no sound. I don't know what exactly is the cause of my Wii being damaged, but it's either or my NAND is corrupted because something went wrong with writing data to it (it's doubtful, but it could happen), or my Wii has got some electricity shock. Either way, my Wii is dead and I don't have a Wii now. I thought I was having bad luck when finding out that the blu-ray drive of my PS3 was broken, and then you also discover the next day that your Wii is broken. How lucky am I?

Well, pretty lucky, because I still have my warranty for the Wii which ends in 3 days. Gonna call Nintendo, and hopefully I will get another Wii, though it's modded. Of course I get one with firmware 4.3, and I don't have LEGO Indiana Jones. I do have Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but I live in Holland (tiny little country that we all have heard of). Yippie. That means I need to rent or borrow it somewhere.

This was my first, and ''very'' intresting Blog. Have a fun time with your Wii, 'cause I miss it now already.
